Because this is a book reaction, I'll be discussing a lot of characters and scenes from the book. So if you have not read the trilogy plus this novella, I highly suggest that you should read first. If you have already read it, then you may proceed...
BEFORE READING:
This has been one of my anticipated books for the month of May and I was thrilled when I found out that Ms. Maas is releasing a novella. I had a MAJOR book hang over after reading the last book, A Court of Wings and Ruin (ACOWAR) because I was unsatisfied with the ending that I know that there will be a next book. I was not sure though if it is a full-length novel or not. So when this was announced late of last year, I have a very high expectations about this novella.
WHILE READING:
OH MY GOODNESS!!! I don't know how I feel as I start reading the first chapter. My excitement goes from 10 down to 5. You might be asking why. Because I was expecting that everyone in the Inner Circle plus Nesta and Elain plus Lucien will have their own slot in the novella. I did not expect that it will be still the point of view (POV) majority, by Feyre and Rhysand. I understand that readers need to see what had happened, a few months after the war and how they go on with their lives as they rebuilt Velaris and also themselves (the effects of war). Again, I was expecting the whole gang to have a chapter or 2 each of their own POV. I was not prepared for Cassian's and Mor's POVs (though Mor has like 2 POVs - that's not bad. At least we get to read her thoughts). The only thing that makes me raise my eyebrows is that their POVs are written in third-person. I had this mixed feelings about it. Will the spin-off of this series will be written in third-person? I felt it is a bit unfair, seeing that Feyre's and Rhysand's POVs are written in first-person. Ever since I was introduced to Rhysand's Illyrian brothers, Cassian and Azriel, I have been rooting for Azriel for a while now. Of course, when it comes to relationship development I began shipping him (Az) to Elain. I remember that scene in ACOWAR wherein Feyre saw how Azriel lent his dagger, Truth-Teller to Elain. Feyre already thought of a theme and imagine how will she paint the two. I also agreed with her when she blurred out to Rhysand about her observation on how her sister Elain is a good match to the Shadowsinger/spymaster Azriel. I was EXTREMELY disappointed and unsatisfied on how they are appeared in the novella. I was hopping for more of ElRiel (ElainXAzriel) relationship to be develop. Lastly, can we talk about how rude Nesta is. I mean... AGH! I like her feistiness but this is waaay out of control. I was expecting more about her since I barely seen her powers (in ACOWAR wherein she unleashed her destructive power to the King of Hybern). I am very curious about her powers, especially when the Cauldron was destroyed and remade again (as her powers are said to be from the Cauldron). Oh, I almost forgot LUCIEN. He has a limited limelight and of course, I started to hate him when he did not even confront Elain about their mating bond. No, actually it is a mixture of hate and sympathy for him. I am assuming that he is fed up with how Elain is treating him, how his friendship with Tamlin is broken (he is starting to blame Feyre), and now seeking a new friendship bond with Vassa and Jurian in the mortal (human) realm.
AFTER READING:
I was not satisfied (I think I have said this like thrice now hahaha) with the novella. Instead of some questions in the previous book (ACOWAR) are answered, I was left with more questions and practically no answers at all! This novella is a mixture of epilogue for FeySand (FeyreXRhysand) and prologue for NesSian (NestaXCassian) spin-off trilogy. I'm not quite sure if those 3 books will represented by other members of the Inner Circle. My heart is shattered into pieces.
RATING: 3.5 out of 5 stars
The writing was not bad, it is just the story that I was not expecting. I absolutely adore Ms. Maas and I'm going insane because I cannot wait for the next book which is said to be release next year.
PS: Please comment below if you want to discuss about ACOFAS because seriously, I need it!
