Hello there! This is the first time that I simultaneously read 2 books which coincidentally have (almost) the same theme. With that, I decided to do a MASH-UP book review. My reviews are solely mine: brutal and honest; and as much as possible, spoiler-free. So without further ado, let's proceed... AUTHOR: Tahereh Mafi (about the author click here) DATE RELEASED: November 15, 2011 PUBLISHED BY: Harper Collins SERIES: Book 1 to the Shatter Me series **For the synopsis of the book, click here THE REVIEW: This novel is about a 17-year-old girl who was in prison for 3 years because of her lethal powers that she has no knowledge therefore, she does not know how to use them. Of all the POVs (Point of Views) that I have read so far, this is very confusing. At first, I am not sure if it is a typo-error or is it part of how author made the character be. The use of metaphors makes some parts of the novel, more confusing. As for the characters, they made me feel a lot of things: excited, anxious, mad, annoyed, and bored. As for the story, I believe this is purely a love story and not something a dystopian-theme has (I mean aside from love story, there are all sorts of happenings like rebellions, wars, power-grab, etc.). RATING: 3 out of 5 stars I was not sure if I will be picking up this series. It is popular to a lot of bookworms in both booktube (bookworms on YouTube) and bookstagram (bookworms on Instagram) community, yet I find the characters annoying - one of the reasons why I cannot connect to it. AUTHOR: Sabaa Tahir (about the author click here) DATE RELEASED: February 9, 2016 PUBLISHED BY: Razorbill SERIES: Book 1 to An Ember in the Ashes series **For the synopsis of the book, click here THE REVIEW: This novel is about 2 persons, intertwined by fate. First is a girl who will to anything to get her beloved brother out of prison by agreeing to be a spy for the rebels. The second is a boy who is the top soldier in his (military) academy yet he questions about the government he is about to serve and his true calling. This novel has take my breath away. Literally, I cannot put this down. I like how the flow of each protagonist's POV - the intensity, and emotions are all seeping out as I read. I cannot give justice on how to better describe the characters. As if you are watching a very intense movie or TV series that is dark, and politically-scary. As for the story, some may say that it sets in a Ancient Roman empire era - for me, I felt more like Persia/Oman era because of the desert and cruelty of government. Everything is so action-packed that makes me (almost) fall on the edge of my seat. There are few scenes in the story that I had to scream because of the intensity and nervousness for that particular character. It does make feel that this and that characters cannot be trusted. RATING: 4.5 out of 5 stars
I cannot move on from that intensity and I am definitely going to pick up the second book. I even remember that I forgot to breathe towards the conclusion of the story. I highly recommend this, especially if you are into ancient civilization-type era.
