MASH-UP BOOK REVIEW: The Wicked Deep and The Rules of Magic - Old Magic in the Modern Day Era5/22/2018 Hi guys! How are you all? Now, let's talk about MAGIC in the modern era. Think of that old TV show Charmed, or that old movie The Craft or Practical Magic. Well on this second mash-up book review, I'll be sharing to you these books that gave out that modern-day, mystical vibe. AUTHOR: Shea Ernshaw (about the author click here) DATE RELEASED: March 6, 2018 PUBLISHED BY: Simon Pulse SERIES: This is a standalone novel **For the synopsis of the book, click here THE REVIEW: This novel is about a high school senior, Penny and her so-called cursed town of Sparrow, Oregon. 200 years ago, 3 sisters believed to be witches are sentenced by the people to die by drowning. But before they died, the sisters cursed the whole town: a week before the summer solstice, they will comeback by possessing teenage girls and one by one start killing men. This book strongly reminds me of a combination of an old TV series, Harper's Island - because of its spooky, dark and eerie theme; and an old movie, The Craft - wherein four teenagers are on the road to study witchcraft. You can already feel the atmosphere the moment you start reading it. Just when I thought that I can predict the story, look out for the twist! It was wonderfully written - makes you want to find this place and check it out for yourself. A town living in a curse for 2 decades and well, as much as I want to continue, I can't because it might spoil everything. My only issue is the lack of character development with other characters. I mean, the interaction with the protagonist and antagonist are so brief. It should be explore more since we are talking about dead witches coming back to the town by possessing (mainly) teenage girls. RATING: 3.75 out of 5 stars I love how the setting of the story took in the modern day and how it was dark and mystical. A perfect Hallow's night read. AUTHOR: Alice Hoffman (about the author click here) DATE RELEASED: October 10, 2017 PUBLISHED BY: Simon & Schuster SERIES: according to Simon & Schuster's response on Goodreads: "While The Rules of Magic is a prequel, you certainly do not need to read Practical Magic first. The Rules of Magic works beautiful as a stand-alone! You'll find some characters you know and love from watching the movie over and over (if you're like me, at least once a year!)--but you'll also find new characters to fall in love with in the pages of this novel. I hope you enjoy reading The Rules of Magic, and I hope you'll let us know what you think once you do!" -Dana **For the synopsis of the book, click here THE REVIEW: Another family of witches that are cursed for centuries now because of one mistake: falling in love with a wrong person. Since then, the matriarch of the family became overprotective with her 3 children. I am a believer of magic and paranormal things surrounding our present dimension. I have been into soulmates, karma, reincarnation and past life/lives when I was in college. It was also during those times that I binge watch the old TV series Charmed, and even scout books and movies with themes like those mentioned. One of the movies that I have watched is Practical Magic which I did not know that there's a book with the same title EXIST! Ok, enough of the babbling! How do I find this book? Magical. That's it. It was written beautifully - full of descriptive that you will fell in love with it. But I was not feeling the connection with the characters. Maybe because the setting of the novel goes back in the 60s. Being a person gifted with magic does not mean that you will follow the path set out for you. This novel shows that you can still make your own life choices and create your own destination. RATING: 4 out of 5 stars
I love anything to do with modern magic and witches, but this one is not for me. It can also be a Hallow's night read, too.
