It has been awhile since the last time I gave in into reading a hyped book series. I had my fair share of hyped books that either disappoint me or put me into a serious reading slump. Here are my reaction to the 4 books of The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer. **SPOILER ALERT** In case you have not read this series, I should warn you that there are a lot of spoilers. So, you have been warned... CINDER This is the first book of Marissa Meyer's The Lunar Chronicles and it is a Cinderella retelling, set in a future Earth. The story revolved around a female cyborg named Cinder who is a mechanic with an evil stepmother, an equally evil stepsister and an understanding younger stepsister, and an android assistant named Iko. The instant I start reading, I was in love with it! This is actually the first Marissa Meyer's novel that I have read and it was not disappointed at all. I love the banter between Cinder and Kai, and you can immediately sense their flirting attraction to each other. My favorite character is Iko. I had a good laugh with her sarcasm that you will forget that she is an android at all. My rate: 4.75 out of 5 stars because I really enjoy it and looking forward to the next book. SCARLET The second book to TLC and it is a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. It tells the backstory of Scarlet Benoit, the granddaughter of a militant pilot that once have rescued a supposed-to-be dead princess (the true heir to the Lunar throne). Upon learning that her grandmother is missing, Scarlet searched their small town in the hopes of looking for a clue. She bumped into a mysterious guy who called himself Wolf and asked for his help locating her grandmother. The second book lived up with the first one although I was not thrilled with Scarlet's strong yet super stubborn attitude. I like how mysterious Wolf is but as I read,I can feel the confusion and irritation of Scarlet towards this lone street fighter (or that is what Wolf claims). Also in this book that Marissa Meyer introduced Captain (or is it really Cadet) Carwsell Thorne. To be honest I was a bit irritated at him because I felt he was wanting attention. But as the story progress, I love him all the more, especially with his playful banter with Cinder and Iko. My rate is 4 out of 5 stars because as much as I do not like Scarlet's backstory (I got a bit confused as much as irritated), I love to laugh at Thorne. CRESS The third book to TLC and another retelling, this time Rapunzel. In the first book, Marissa Meyer introduced a new character that will help Cinder on the quest to dethrone the current (evil) queen of Luna, Levana. In this book, we get to see the life of Cress (according to her mistress, her real name is Crescent) inside a roving satellite where she spent seven years, hacking her way into Earthen's security, "cloaking" unauthorized Lunar ships, and eavesdropping into Earthen Union leaders. All of this are under the order of Queen Levana. If the second book was a bit disappointment, then the third book is make up for that! I like the interaction between Thorne and Cress. Can we talk about how action-packed this book it?? Yes, I love action and this one did not disappoint me at all! I was anticipating about how Earthens will fight Lunars, given that the aliens have gift of manipulation. I am also looking forward for Cinder to use her cyborg abilities to apprehend the enemies but I was a tad bit of disappointment. But I like how she started to value the people around her, those who truly care about and her mission of dethroning Queen Levana and bring peace once and for all. My rate is 4.75 out of 5 stars because of action scenes and also I found Cinder to be (too) whiny because of her self-doubt. WINTER The fourth and last book to TLC and this is another retelling of Snow White. Everyone knows that Queen Levana have a stepdaughter that she rather not discuss or even bring her around. Princess Winter is the cousin of the lost Princess Selene and was beloved by her people more, which makes her evil queen stepmother more jealous. Despite of her scars that marred her face, Winter won the hearts of her people by taking care of their needs. The conclusion to the Lunar Chronicles and sad to say, I was not liking Winter's story. I know that her insanity was the cause of her not using her gift but there are instances that she is lucid and can even make own decisions. But once Jacin, her bodyguard and childhood sweetheart is around, she became dependent. I did understand her situation but I was also irritated with Jacin's attitude towards Cinder's team. I was expecting him to be a bit understanding with the mission on hand but I guess his main priority is the safety of Winter. As for the action scenes, oh my goodness! It was epic because they have lost a lot of comrades and just when everyone thought that they are about to lose because they cannot fight the Lunar power, miracles happen. My rate is 4 out of 5 stars because towards the end, I felt that the scenes were a bit rushed. Particularly on the case of Scarlet and Wolf, and the restoration of peace in Luna. The wrapping up is quick but the ending was a cliffhanger! HAVE YOU READ STARS ABOVE? If you were like me who have not yet read the novella, Stars Above then I suggest that you should put it on your TBR list.
