If given a choice, would you like to sacrifice yourself and freedom for the sake of the empire (as taught by the elders) or plan and create a strategy to help everyone? From Blood and Ash is the first book from the Blood and Ash series by Jennifer L. Armentrout. It follows the main character, Poppy, a The Maiden - chosen by the Gods to ascend to bring peace and prosperity to the kingdom. But unlike what the elders expected her to learn and follow, she secretly rebels against them by learning how to fight (with the help of her guard) and do other forbidden things that will make her unworthy so that she is free. As the day of her Ascension nears, the threat of danger is closing in on her and her friends. Poppy must learn the terrible truth and decide for her future and the future of the kingdom.
The whole plot is interesting, but some chapter scenes are so detailed that I do not think it is necessary for future reference. Somehow, this reminds me of both Twilight (which I did not read, just watched the 1st move only) and A Court of Mist and Fury. The flirting scenes between Poppy and the mysterious new guard Hawke are sizzling hot (not a great combination when you are living in a very tropical country like mine). That, I might understand the hype surrounding this book. But I was not feeling this book as some triggering moments made me want to skip the entire page or even stop reading it. Also, I find this book a bit predictable. I mean, I was not surprised (at all) by the revelations in the second half of the book. Overall, it was a little entertaining. Would I recommend it? Hmmm, if you are looking for a real in-depth adult fantasy story - this might not be the one. I rate this 3 out of 5 stars.
