What would you do if someone discovers your secret and put a curse on your brothers? Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim is the first book of the duology. It is a retelling of the Grimm Brothers' fairytale, The Six Swans. The setting is East-Asian/Chinese-inspired that is full of mystic powers and secrets. The story is about a princess of Kiata, Shiori. She is the youngest and only daughter of Emperor Hanariho. She has six older brothers whom she loves and adores, and a stepmother, the Imperial consort Raikama. Shiori is hiding a terrifying secret that is rare and forbidden in Kiata. Unfortunately, someone found out and cursed her brothers. To break it and save them, she has to put her trust and team up with a witty paper crane, a pompous young dragon, and a sentinel that she has been avoiding ever since she ran out of her betrothal ceremony.
This is my first time reading Ms. Lim's works and I love how she wrote the story in full detail. As if I was transported back in a fantasy feudal era where you get to see magic everywhere! I like the character development and world-building (not to mention the humor brought by Kiki and Seryu). Such a page-turner! 4.7 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this specially to those who are into retellings, Asian mythologies and folklores, and Asian-inspired settings. I cannot wait for the next book!
